Excellent post! Feminism is about choices. It is about being authentic. I also stayed at home for a few years to take care of my baby daughter and now I am getting back to work part-time. I know I made a difference in her life and I am happy with the choices I made.

Sheryl: This reminds me of my struggle over the years to make people aware of the use of "he" whenever animals and inanimate objects are referred to. The funniest one is when people are talking about chickens or cows and still say "he"! What's not so funny is that while girls are forming their awareness of the world around them, language is very powerful. I will never forget when my little daughter Sarah at around age 5 asked me "Mommy, can girls be doctors?" She had apparently only heard of and seen doctors that were men. Immediately, I went out and found us a female physician, and I became much more aware of gender specific language. And this same daughter is now in Med School!

This line struck me the most and has made an imprint in my mind:

"In my mind, it was a clear matter of Choice."

I think more than ever, it is the Choice of what we do with our lives as women that defines our being. For example, the old thought of being a stay at home mother was degrading or made us a lesser person, as if staying in the workforce empowered us or served as a tool of equality. Now, the Choice to raise my children and be the driver behind the nurturing of another human is one of the most feminist stances that I can take. I also gave birth at home with a midwife, making all the decisions about my body, my birth, and my child. Empowerment comes with Choice.

Thank you for such a great article!

I personally interpreted the ending not as weak or futile but as strength
Firdaus has chosen to end her own life and in doing so she holds complete, undeniable power for the first time (something she desires throughout the book). This is seen in so many of those beautiful quotes in the final passage of her identifying what it is that allows her society to enslave her and then letting go of that
I believe it is an enormous display of strength and power and perfectly surmises what El Saadawi is attempting to discuss throughout the book

Wow! What a wonderful post. Your daughter could not have been given better advice. More young women need to hear those words from their mothers. Thank you for sharing!
