So to Speak, founded in 1993 by an editorial collective of women MFA candidates at George Mason University, has served as a space for feminist writing and art for nearly twenty years. So to Speak: a feminist journal of language and art publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art that lives up to a high standard of language, form, and meaning. We look for work that addresses issues of significance to women’s lives and movements for women’s equality and are especially interested in pieces that explore issues of race, class, and sexuality in relation to gender.

  2. I am interested in submitting a visual image for your publication to meet the October 15th deadline but the submission manager does not provide instructions in how to upload the image and documentation that is required for submission. Please advise.

    Best, Kim

  4. Dear Sir/Madam,

Would an excerpt from a memoir be eligible or must the piece stand on its own?

    Thank you in anticipation.

  6. If the piece can stand on its own as a complete essay, we’d be interested in reading it! Submission guidelines can be found on the Contests page.

  8. regarding the Jennie Joseph interview: I like stories about people who take the bull by the horns and invent what they feel is needed, and then they work it. Jennie is one of those women. She INVENTED her clinic – she built it and they came. the women-of-color death-in-childbirth number is shocking and i was unaware. totally unaware. i’m glad i read this interview. the other thing i really appreciate is how large Jennie makes her birthing tent. all philosophies welcome. she sounds so sensible and smart. thanks for introducing her!
